Tax Status For Products & Services

Overview

StudioCloud recognizes that sometimes your products and services may not be taxed.  This may be because in your location a specific item is not taxable or because you are providing your services to a charity or free of charge.  There are two ways to make products and services non-taxable in StudioCloud.

How to Make a Product or Service Non-Taxable by Default

What this means is that anytime a product or service is added to an invoice or estimate it will not be included in tax calculations unless you change its tax status in the invoice.  This is what you want to do for any product or service that is usually not taxed in your location.  To make an item non-taxable by default please use the following steps.

  1. Click on the Point of Sale component
  2. Click the Settings tab
  3. Click on the Manage Price Lists button
  4. Create a new product/service or find and edit an existing product/service
  5. Change Tax Status to either Tax Exempt or Zero Tax (The different tax status items are explained in this support article: Tax Exempt vs Zero Tax)
  6. Click the Save button

How to Make a Product or Service Non-Taxable in an Invoice/Estimate/Quote

Sometimes a product or service will be taxed by default but in some rare cases you need to mark it as non-taxable for a specific invoice or estimate.  Before you get started in an invoice or estimate you need to make sure that you have enabled the tax status setting in invoices and estimates.  See the article Enable the Tax Status within Invoices and Estimates for instructions on how to do this.  Follow the instructions below to make a product or service non-taxable in an invoice or estimate.

  1. Click on the Point of Sale component
  2. Create or edit an invoice/estimate/quote
  3. Find the product/service you want to be non-taxable or add it to the invoice/estimate/quote
  4. Click on the drop-down box in the Tax column and select either Tax Exempt or Zero Tax.  (The different tax status items are explained in this support article: Tax Exempt vs Zero Tax )
    1. If you do not see the Tax column in the invoice/estimate/quote window then enable that column using the instructions here Enable the Tax Status within Invoices and Estimates
  5. Click the Save button to save the Invoice/Estimate/Quote
